Hello,
We went a whole version 2x without a demo, I don't expect this is a priority?

I asked about this and was told by Canopus/Grass Valley that a version 2 demo existed, but that it was hacked and therefore pulled. According to the guy I spoke with, version 3 is susceptible to the same hack, so no demo is available.

Hi there. There are no plans for a ProCoder 3 demo. Since file conversion software applications all essentially do the same thing, the purpose of the ProCoder trial, is to give people an idea of the workflow, configuration and encoding speeds that people can expect when using a ProCoder product.
The workflow concepts have remained unchanged since v1.0. Since then, we've simply added refined format support, extra codecs, and some additional workflow options that in the end, do the same thing that the core application does. So v1.25 is still relevant to a degree.

It would be honest to make a demo for Procoder 3, so customers could check if it really does that they need. I faced with some limitations of the product only when have purchased it (for example, I can't encode h.264 high profile video to .mp4 file).

In my opinion, this argument for not having a version 3 demo simply doesn't work. Given the VAST array of potential features and capabilities in encoding software these days, it's the SPECIFIC capabilities of the encoding application that make or break a buying decision, NOT the general workflow concepts. People can adapt their workflow to fit the software, but they can't add features or capabilities. The capabilities of an application are fixed, and it's these capabilities that determine whether or not an application will work for any given person.
It's a crucial mistake to assume that "file conversion software applications all essentially do the same thing." While this is true in a VERY general sense, it is definitely NOT true to anybody who actually USES this type of software. The important differences are in the details.
It's also important to note that the majority of the competition (Sorrenson, Main Concept, etc.) all offer CURRENT demos of their software -- and they do this for the reasons stated above. To not offer a demo of the current version in this day and age is a mistake from a business point of view, and it's simply naive to think that the version 1.25 demo is "good enough" to make a buying decision.

As there are already complaints on the German Canopus forum about the (grid-) encoding speed of ProCoder 3 compared to PCE for Edius, a demo of V3 would be essential before buying another product from Canopus which does not follow the advertisement.
But as you say the core technology is the same on all ProCoder versions, maybe this is the cause of the speed issues (ProCoder 2 also did not effectively use all CPUs but was advertised as multi-cpu capable)?

I really dont know what they are talking about "this grid encoding", it's non existant for me compared to a normal DVD preset.
I've done many speed tests with ProCoder 3 and, well, lets just say, buy it for the quality.

Is it faster compared to ProCoder 2 or are there also no speed benefits? Is the encoding quality better as the quality from a PC2 encode?

you are one step ahead of me :)
I am yet to find the grid encoding, I expanded all presets and could not find it

Oh, no, it's there, under the top level "system", it's called preview DVD target.
It just isn't any faster

thanks Mark, I just tried it
it encodes at 1.5 times faster than realtime, this is the same as using PC3 with setting on high speed
so, you are right

Sorry Markus, I missed your post.
I don't want to continue this topic here becasue it's "off topic". I'll go to another thread, labelled, ProCoder 3 speed and grid encoding.
