View Full Version : Aliased edges on video when exporting HD to SD from EDIUS timeline

Unless this has been fixed in a recent version of Edius, there's a significant aliasing problem when encoding from an HD project timeline to SD MPEG2 output using Procoder Express. The standard user workaround has been to switch to a DV project setting before encoding to SD, but then titles and transitions have to be adjusted to be positioned properly on the screen. Given that this is a major workflow issue for HD editors, what is the current prospect for eliminating this problem?

Someone (was it you?) had some sample stills to show the differences.
If someone can post examples and full export/workflow steps, it would be appreciated.

It was me, I was told 6 months ago that this problem was duplicated and was being looked at by Canopus in Japan.
But here it is again.

Just look at anything diagonal like his colar, shoulder, hairline... you will see stair step, the hdtimeline bmp is encoded straight from HD timeline using ProCoder 2 at 8500kbps, the sdtimeline bmp was switch to SD NTSC D1 59.94i 16:9 before encoding to MPEG2.
Please look at this and make it a priority, this bug has been since the beginning of Edius NX for HDV.
Thanks.

I don't have any samples handy at the moment but it's an easy problem to replicate: take any Edius HD timeline and encode directly to widescreen SD MPEG2 using Procoder Express. The resulting footage will be aliased in a way which makes it unacceptable when viewed on a decent HDTV: faces and text are good items to look at to see the problem. This is a significant issue which needs to be addressed for HD to SD delivery.

This was talked about in the old forum for Procoder 2. It is my understanding, which may be wrong, that this was fixed in Procoder 3. I have yet to test this with PC3.
The work around for the stairstep was to change the HD project into an SD project and either finish the project by SD or import an already completed HD file. Then encode from that timeline out to whatever format.
This process removed the 'jaggies' issue.
