In Edius 3 I used to be able keep a clip fixed in one place on the timeline and only move (slip) the content inside it without changing the start and end points on the time timeline. Version 4 doesn't seem to have this function. How do I do slip edit?
Look in the helpfile, go to "index", keyword "slip" and you have 1 way to do this.
Or enter "trim mode" in version 4 with F6 => you'll find a "slip trim button" under the right screen.

If you select F6 you will see you are now in trim mode.
If you look to the right of the buttons across the bottom of the overlays you will see one that is called select-slip.
When you select this button you will see the ends of the selected clip is now colored.
All you have to do is hold the mouse cursor over the overlay windows... hold your left mouse button down, and then drag to the right or left and you will be slipping the video inside of your In and Out points. :)

A Slip Edit is a very commonly performed operation when adding cut aways or even just timing a shot. In the older versions of Edius it was a simple case of holding down CTRL+ALT (I think) and "slipping" the clip within it's I/O points. This was great because often you are looking at an external monitor while "slipping" so as long as your mouse was clicking in the region of the clip it would slip around as you clicked and dragged it.
Now, "Slipping" is a converluded process of Pressing F6, Clicking on an icon and having to click a totally different region of the screen or use those annoying green and yellow light up bits. In contrast, Premiere Pro lets you tap "Y" and then click anywhere in the clip to slip it around. (AVID & FCP have similar shortcuts)
The old Edius "shift" "ctrl" and "alt" combination keys were much better than they are now. I don't understand why they were ever removed.
I've assigned the "Y" key to "Trim - Select Clip", but clicking on a clip to Slip it just disables Trim again. Yes, I can use those annoying green / yellow things, but it requires a few pixels of mouse/waycom precision and I can't be looking at an external monitor at the same time as "slipping" around. It would be much better if the whole clip could be clicked and dragged around to slip it.
Or better still (and every long time Edius user I've talked to agrees) bring back the old Edius keys!!! Or at least an option "Alturnative Trim Keys"
It's the biggest cause of swearing in our studio and we are shocked that no one else is jumping up and down about the fact the old keys were removed. We really expected to see them back in Edius 4.5. The Keyboard Shortcut assignment doesn't allow you to put things back to how they were.
If I'm wrong, please tell me, because the old shortcuts would make editing a lot faster than it is now.
thanks

Is anyone using the keyboard shortcuts for Trim - Select Slip (no default key), and Trim -1 and +1 frame (default , and . for -1 and +1 frame)?

I only use the trim mode to nudge. For me Keyboard shortcuts in normal mode are way Faster.

I agree. I've found trim mode to be the longer way round in Edius - You can get there using normal edit mode quicker. Avid trim mode FTW!

when it comes to split trimming and trimming, I prefer Edius3 in many ways
don't like that new yellow and green business

If you are slip trim you don't place the mouse on tghe clip... you drag it up in the overlay window area.
I will have to try and get a tutorial out on this because it is WAY hard if you try to use the colored ends on the clips. :)

Hi Mike
since my edit workflow is now slower than what it was in E3, I for one would certainly be interrested in any tutorial that can get me back to the same speed
<OT on> btw, I just edited a TV documentary, I spent 71 hours and had 136 TMPro related crashes, I made a stroke on a piece of paper every time the error popped or when TmPro vanished </OT off>

Anton... We are aware of the TM problem and they are working on it. Do not try to hijack another thread please.

I would think that a tutorial on trim mode would be very useful.

I agree with all those who want the old slip edit method back (it was hold down ALT and drag the clip, by the way).
I'd also like the video/audio split edit back (SHIFT + trim) please! Coloured clip ends don't do anything for me.
Other people have made these points when discussing desired features for 4.5, but they were ignored.
If someone in GV is worried that these are non-standard and might confuse Avid editors or something, they can be IN ADDITION TO the new Edius methods, or as a user-selectable option!
Please listen to your users!

I am sure I will antagonize some, but please don't think that just because something is requested by a few people here and it is not implemented in some update, that all is being ignored. I can tell you for a fact that these requests are looked at and taken seriously. There are many reasons that something may or may not be added or changed. It may be a time issue, it may be an encoding issue, it may be that it does not fit into the future direction of the NLE, etc.
Also it is an easy trap to fall into when we think that what is said on these forums indicates what the majority of users want. I am continually amazed when I travel around the country at how many Edius users know nothing about these forums.
So by all means, please keep submitting feature requests but don't think that you are being ignored if it is not implemented.

I fully agree that not every request can or should be implemented. But this request is not really about a new feature, it refers to the trimming functions that were present in EDIUS for several years and were taken out in version 4.0... with no evident reason (I don't think they interfere with the new trim mode).
Since trimming is one of the most used functions and really at the heart of an NLE, the loss of these shortcut functions has a huge impact on the working procedure of many of us.

One thing you could do (a workaround again) is to assign a
key to slip trim (you dont have to be in the trim-mod). Now
your clip has this ugly green/yellow lines outside. With "," and
"." you can slip frame by frame and with "shift"+"," and "shift"
+"." you can slip 10 frames.
I liked the old way better, but it works for me. See what the
future might bring.
