Can't control brightness, contrast

Hi - I have my ADVC 300 linked up to my VHS recorder and my PC - In the preview screen of the picture controller the picture display is very dark - If I go to Video 1 in the control panel and start ticking boxes and moving sliders the contrast/brightness temporarily is adjusted for about 2 seconds - it then goes back to a dark picture - anything captured is also very dark - my dip switches are set as follows SW2-1 is off SW1-8 is off

any timebase corrector will work to automatically remove the brightness variation code in the vertical interval
