Convert AVI to MOV

Hi,

is there any way to convert DVCPRO HD avi files to mov?

I can't believe, that I waisted all that money for Edius Broadcast/Procoder + upgrade of my PC just because of such a minor problem!
(Because the agencies I supply with video don't accept avi files.)

I don't know of a way to do that because Apple does not support DVCProHD in the Windows version of QuickTime. You can't even do what you want with QuickTime Player's Export feature.

Yes, ONLY the MAC version supports DVCPRO HD Quicktime.

The only thing the original poster can do is to ask the people who supply him .mov files to export it to a lossless codec such as Animation Codec or PNG (Use lossless for both).

Edius will open and edit QuickTime files containing DVCProHD video, it just can't output to it. There is no need to request the files in another format.

You seem to have gotten it backwards--the company he works with wants him to supply them with DVCPro HD Quicktime video--they are not giving it to him.

I was responding to the post from STORMDAVE who said the original poster should request Animation Codec files. That's not necessary because Edius can work with DVCProHD QuickTime files.

As far as I know, there is no Mac version of the Canopus codecs, so you can't use Canopus HQ or Canopuis Lossless. If you stick to a codec that is supported on the Mac, you should have no trouble using AVI files.

The instruction is clear: DVCPro HD in Quicktime!
AVI files are not accepted

Unfortunately in that case, you're left with no options. There is no way (that I know of) to make a DVCPRO HD QuickTime file on a Windows machine.

You can't. Even if you open the avi files in quicktime, it will all just be white.

Your best bet is to capture to Microsoft DV...and just stick with MSDV throughout your whole process...that is if you export a file from Edius, check the "Use Microsoft DV" box before you export.

Use ScenalyzerLive to capture to MSDV.

You are correct. You just can't open these DVCPROHD .avi files under OSX...whoever uses DVCPROHD should contact Apple or post in this forum to see if anyone can help you out:

Hi Dorian,

We've had the same problem, with a Mac client wanting DVCPRO HD Quicktime files. This was because they have to "render" (in Final Cut) the file and they lose quality on the recompression.

What we did, is supplied them a P2 CONTENTS folder of DVCPRO HD content. This way, the Mac ingests the P2 folder and pulls the data into a Quicktime HD file on it's end. No quality loss... and an easy way for them to get it back as DVCPRO HD. You are still delievering DVCPRO HD, just in P2 format.

It was my suggestion to my client that they could do that and not lose quality. But if they are using AE or something, then I guess P2 is going to be a bit annoying for them.

It's another option anyway... and certainly one that worked perfectly in our DVCPRO HD Mac vs. PC situation. (and can only be done in Edius Broadcast)

Another option for FCP users is to use Raylight for Mac from DVFilm (http://www.dvfilm.com/). It allows FCP to work with the MXF files natively without having to rewrap everything in a QuickTime container -- much quicker, saves disk space, and keeps all metadata intact.
