hi to all

i have edius hd , how can i know is it 10 or 8 bit ???

in canopus website they dont say about 8 or 10 bit .

in matrox and blackmagic there is codec for 10 bit .

what about canopus , is there codec for 8bit and codec for 10 bit ???

thanks to all .

EDIUS software and hardware process in 8 bit only.

This is from a Canopus Whitepaper

Why 8-bit editing is superior to 10-bit editing

A widely held misconception about HD editing is that systems processing uncompressed or 10-bit precision data provide better quality.
However, it important to note that during the HD VTR recording process, video data is already reduced to 8-bit precision before it is
compressed and written to tape. Since the original input to the HD compressor is at 8-bit precision, the decompressed output from the HD
decompressor is also at 8-bit precision, which means there is no improvement in quality by processing it at 10-bit precision. Furthermore, the
realtime functionality of a 10-bit system is significantly reduced since the editing system must do twice as much work to retrieve the data, and
a significant amount of additional storage is required to effectively store the higher-precision data. The quality of the HD compression itself, not
the extra 2 bits of precision, make the biggest difference in an HD editing system – especially for realtime HD editing.
With the Canopus HQ codec’s variable bitrate encoding, EDIUS HD can achieve better video quality than both DVCPRO HD and HDCAM. Since
its video quality is superior to that used in the HD VTRs themselves, there is no fear of degradation while editing in realtime with EDIUS HD

He is probably concern about graphic, animation stuff, for sure those will benefit with a 10bit editing system. Actually it would benefit with video also, cuz I do see banding sometime when using a bitmap for alpha channel in Edius.

Exactly.

If your source footage is 8 bit, you are not going to gain anything in a 10bit space...but once you mix your 8bit footage with graphics (In After Effects) you will see that 8bit is not superior to 10 bit in this situation.

Let me tell you a story about your superior 8bit compressed signal.
I do a lot of underwater footage. Yes the original is compressed, but when
I bring it into a timeline t 8bit HQ I sometimes get "banding" on a shot with blue water aimed at the sun. The banding is around the bright spot out.
The original does not display this banding.

Now, I used the Prospect codec which is 10bit compressed, an 8bit uncompressed, and a 10bit uncompressed, none of these....on the same shot....produced the banding. All files were yuv not rgb.

I am still hoping for a 10bit version of HQ. This would be nice.

And Dave is correct about the 8bit ontop of a 10bit project. Those graphics and titles "POP" in 10bit.
