Stopping reverse playback is unreliable in Edius 4.24

Pressing the space bar during reverse playback (J key) not always stops. Sometimes it works, but sometimes playback changes from reverse to normal direction instead of stopping.

Navigation in timeline becomes quite annoying because of that.

Granted I tested on v4.5, but hitting spacebar after using 'j' for reverse playback, instructs EDIUS to immediately start playback.

The way EDIUS defines things (by default):

J Key = Review
K Key = Pause
L Key = Cue
Spacebar Key = Play/Stop

When you start rev/cueing, EDIUS will always assume playback is in 'Stop' state, which means that a press of the spacebar will start playback.

The best way to use the J and L keys, is to use 'K' for pausing.

One of the reasons why K+L and the Spacebar are separate in their function, is because of the nature of the EDIUS memory buffer. Using 'K' for playback (x1) will not prefill the buffer, nor will it stop playback at a frame drop.

I fully understand the difference of the spacebar and the L key concerning playback (dropped frame handling etc.). But I still believe there is a bug related to the stop function of the spacebar:


If you press the spacebar during rev playback, the reaction is not consistent: sometimes it stops, sometimes it starts playback.
In previous Edius versions (1.x to 3.x) the spacebar paused any kind of playback (rev, play or cue). It's hard to believe this behaviour has intentionally been changed now.
In any other editing system I've worked with (Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, Avid Xpress) the spacebar stops any kind of playback. It would be extremely helpful, if Edius 4 had the same behaviour.


So I really hope it's possible to bring back the initial spacebar behaviour...

On 4.51c the space bar key still seems to have this behavior:

If you press it while review or cue is running, the result is still not predictable: sometimes it stops, sometimes it immediately switches to playback.

I really would appreciate a predictable behavior... preferably the one of the Edius versions prior to 4.x: space bar stops any kind of playback, no matter if cue, preview or normal playback.

I fully understand the difference between "L" and the space bar for playback, but still believe this inconsistency should be corrected.
