These presets are for Mpeg2 HD targeted at Blu-ray applications and for use with ProCoder 2 or 3. However, if you own ProCoder 3 I suggest you download the templates form the H.264 thread http://ediusforum.grassvalley.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4146 because they have all in one (mpeg2 & avc).
EDIT. I'll just point out.
The last three presets have incorrect frame rates baed on their target name, please change them
Thanks Jerry.

Wow, too cool.
Very nice, indeed.
If my math is correct, the 1440 x 1080 settings will yield a 4:3 image. Will those images 'naturally' be displayed on a 16:9 monitor with the black bars on both sides?
Thanks,
Jon

That an anamorphic (non-square pixel) widescreen format, just like widescreen DV.

Yes, that one is set to 16:9. For DVDit PRO HD the manual saya that only 1920x1080 will pass but that is not the case, I have tried the 1440x1080 16:9 Mpeg 2 preset and it passes through fine. Saves render times!!!!

Thanks for providing this presets - great.
What kind of Blue Ray Burner ?

Sorry, my name's not Jerry, I was referring to Jerry who spotted the small mistake.
I dont think it matters really, I have a Pioneer.

I have the Sony BDR-100. As Mark said, I don't think it matters.
It's how you use them more than what burner you use.
Boys, these presets do work. Mark has spent some time putting them
together for us. He has used them, and so have I. Thank him, not me.

Actually, a colleague did these for us. Thus the mistake on a couple of frame rates. :)

Thanks for all your input. Any feedback on the drives or media? And... maybe where you guys are currently finding the best price on media these days.
Thanks,

I have Broadcast 4 and need to upgrade to PC 3. Is that a downloadable file and is there a cost? I will be burning BluRay files. Planning to get the 2x Sony BluRay burner. I have been using Adobe Encore to create DVD's but imagine they are behind the curve as usual. What is a good HD BluRay solution?
Thanks

Procoder 3 is a separate product, it's not a simple download and has its own USB dongle.
Owners of Edius and Procoder Express for Edius can buy Procoder 3 at a discounted price of US$ 199.00 -- contact your dealer or Canopus Sales.

Which BluRay burner did you get? Many come bundled with authoring applications.
If you got a bare / OEM drive and have no software, you can get authoring tools from Ulead, Roxio, Nero, and others.

The new Encore CS3 is Blu-Ray ready
It only comes with Premiere CS3 ,it is not a stand alone product any more.

I purchased the Sony BWU-100a 2x speed. I hear the 4x is on the way.
the software included is CyberLink BD Solution which has Power Producer bundled in it as well as Power2Go. So it looks like it will work.
I am most familiar with Adobe Encore and would upgrade. Sad to hear it is not a stand alone anymore. I have PremierePro 2 but stopped using to work with Edius 4 which I love. Still wish there were better tutorials available like Total Training provided for Adobe products.

well, sony is dropping the US price of the PS3 by $100 to $500, so another reason to go that route for just a player

I had the Sony BWU 100-a BluRay burner installed and it came with Cyberlink software to burn a disc. However Cyberlink does not recognize the HD MPEG 2file I created. Do I have the settings correct? Here is what I am doing?
1. ProCoder Wizard
2. Use Procoder to select a target
3. Select target: HD
4. High DEf: Mpeg 2
5. HiDef format 720p
6. Save (it is a m2p) file
7. Job Summary: left everyting as is
Does anyone use the Sony software that came with burner?
Does Edius have a authoring solution? In Procoder 3 you are not able to burn direct to disc as with a DVD.
And finally, I currently use Encore, but it requires a $299 upgrade, even though I don't want there editing software. Or is it time to switch to DVDit for $499?
I am so close. Thanks for any help.

Cyberlink software does not create BDMV format discs only BDAV.
The easiest way to explain this is that BDMV is authoring like a DVD Video but BDAV is just a simple play video stream disc. ie, you can not create menus- BDAV also has a lower bit rate ceiling, I think its 20Mb/s as oposed to 40Mb/s for BDMV.
DVDit PRO HD and Encore CS3 both use BDMV and that's what you should be looking at.

I also downloaded the Nero 7 software but it only seems to create Data files and not video. So, I ordered Encore which I am familiar with. I will post again when I have successfully created a Bluray video.

I am thinking of getting PC 3, can we expect more of these presets? ie Blue Ray that works with any authoring app.? Do we need to have one for 720P and 1080I? or are they all the same? I plan on shooting in 720p and using DVDSP 4.X.

I have burned a few successful BluRay discs on a rewriteable disc. However, on my Samsung player a file I burned worked fine and then a few days later on the same player it did not play...said the disc was not recognized. When this first happended I thought I burned the file wrong. Tried again and it worked.
Here is what I know is working
Use ProCoder 3 (not wizard).
Go to Add
HD
MPEG
Preset MPEG2 HD
I know in the first screen posted here there is a shot of DVDit settings under Application but Encore specific settings do not appear.
Has anyone had success improving bitrates to improve quality or are the Automatic settings the best.
One more thing...I burned a 80 minute doc shot in hi-def but when transcoded it is only 3.84 gig. That seems very compressed. Also there are places in the .m2v file that breakup and turn red and green with vertical bars for 2-4 frames.

Let me chime in on this. There is a sticky on the forum with Bluray presets for
compliant bluray streams. This has been there. Do a search.
Mark posted these a while ago.
http://ediusforum.grassvalley.com/forum/showthread.php?t=362
Presets: read the addendum.
As far as burning bluray. DVDitPROHD, Encore CS3, and Sony Blu-print are available to do this. Unless you are Mr Money Bags,
Dvditprohd and Encore CS3 will be your choices.
My workflow since November has been make my HD stream with Procoder 2, now 3, create 5.1 soundtrack externally, import into authoring program, author, then I burn to disc with Nero 7. You can always burn with the Authoring package as well. I have Encore CS3, but have yet to install awaiting Edius 4.5 for a complete rebuild of my system with the CS3 products. Having used Encore since version 1.0, I personally do not see a problem with it.
Above all, make sure that you create a COMPLIANT BLURAY file. If not,
the encoder in your authoring package will reencode the file again.
I cannot state this strongly enough!
Watch this very closely and read the popup panels very closely...
especially in DVDITPROHD.
If you are doing long programs, 1 to 2 hrs, you should be prepared to wait.
A quad core cpu will help in reducing wait times for encodes.
I usually create an uncompressed or Canopus lossless master file and then encode from that. Remember, you can store files on those blurays as well.
I have been trying to find some way to encode using H.264, but have yet to find presets for this. I know Mark has been looking for this as well.

Thanks for your post on this. The sticky you referenced is the sticky we are in. Is there another?
Do I understand you correctly, that it is better to create an uncompressed file and let the disc authoring program transcode?

No, I am not saying to do that. I refuse to let the authoring package do
any of the encoding. You do not have to use an uncompressed file. Canopus HQ will do.
I create a master file, mainly uncompressed at 1920x1080 which can be brought into most NLE packages. I then do my encoding through Procoder 2, Procoder 3, or Sorenson Squeeze 4.5 . After the MPEG HD file is created, I bring that into my authoring package and create the files for the disc. I then import those files into Nero 7 and burn the disc.
If you do not need to save to a master file, then you can encode straight from the timeline to your MPEG HD file.
The reason I create the master file, I have procoder 2 on one machine and procoder 3 on the other. That way if I need full use of one machine I can encode with the other. My storage is on a network for quick access. Makes life a lot more easy.
I hope that explains it a little better.
Basically, if you are happy with the encoding and burning with the authoring package, stick with that. It comes down to a work flow that works for you.
I just like to have a little more control over things.

Another Blu-Ray presets question.
I notice that all these presets use VBR. My projects are usually very short (usually less than 10 minutes long... rarely over 15 minutes long... never over 20 minutes long) and for my SD MPEGs, I only use CBR at about 8000kbps ( assume this is giving me the best quality).
1. Can I use CBR instead for Blu-Ray discs?
2. What is the max bitrate setting for Blu-Ray disc? I want to crank it to near max level.
Thanks!
Khoi Pham
08-28-2007, 06:16 PM
1. Yes
2. 40mb/sec MPEG2
Mike Truly
08-28-2007, 08:33 PM
Thanks Khoi!
On #2... is that MPEG2 40mb/sec the total (video & audio together)?
Many of my projects have no audio so in those cases I would want the video to be higher to use the full bandwidth.
Thanks again.

Combine all streams is 50, video alone can not exceed 40, as for your other question about regtangular highlights, use the Region filter, that is a filter design for what you want to do. (-:

Mike,
Sure, you can use CBR. If you are putting SD on Blu-ray then there would be no nooed to go over 10Mb/s. Blu-ray supports up to 40Mb/s in the video stream + 8Mb/s in audio.
Mike Truly

Thanks for the guidance all!
I don't want to put SD on Blu-Ray, just very short programs with maximum quality. Now that I know the limits this should work very well.
Thanks again.

Yes... what is a Blu-Ray or Encore compliant MPEG2 file where Encore will NOT try and re-encode the file again?
I'm thinking I have done something wrong in making the MPEG2 in PC3 that is causing this re-encoding.

There is someone been able to generate a bluray structure with H264 + ac3 that work on the Playstation 3 ?
If I use the h264 + aac from Procoder or just the h264 + ac3 that won't work. I'll only get video, but no sound comming out.

The LG is great! I have both the Blu-Ray/DVD/CD burner - HDDVD player and the Blu-Ray/ HDDVD player and been testing it for some time. The reliablity is great and no problems on the burning or playback! I know that it isn't available yet, but IT IS worth the wait! I will have a review on it soon at www.wemakehd.com

Hi All,
Is it possible to encode a short HDV (say 10min @ 1920x1080,1440x1080/other) onto a standard DVD for playback in a PS3 at HDV quality. Not SDV quality. Without using a BD-R. Recommendations/Settings?

You don't have to encode anything, just burn the m2t hdv file straight onto a dvd as "data"and PS3 will play just fine.

Hi Khoi Pham, Thanks for the reply... I haven't tried this yet as you can tell. I obtained PS3 yesterday. Is it possible to play this HDV DVD on other blu-ray set top players as well? A BD menu structure on DVD's used as BD's would be nice. I though this may require a work around of sorts. Or might not be possible...

If you want that type of file you will have to encode using specific bitrates that are different than blu-ray bitrates. You then can create menus with audio and it will play PS3. I can only speak from experience that all of the Sony players will play this type of file. I can not speak for other manufacturers. The one good thing about using DVD...if you mess up it only costs 30-40 cents as opposed to $11.
Khoi Pham

The PS3 can play HDV file, I don't know about other Blu-ray players, I just burn HDV file to dvd and either play them or copy them to PS3 hard drive and use them as demo clips, if you want menus, you will have to encode to blu-ray spec but like Jerry said using lower bitrate that dvd can handle, I have not done that, I encode to Blu-ray spec for full menu BD-R using ProCoder to encoded and Encore CS3 for authoring.
