Default Edius 5.12 and Vista

Question from a new Vista User ....

I have done a search and find that a lot of users are reporting that they are having no problems running Edius on Vista.

I am not so fortunate....

I have tried using Edius on my Vista laptop (32 bit), and a new Core i7 box with 64 bit Vista Ultimate, and I am getting the same problem on both Vista machines: When importing or capturing clips to the bin, there is a huge delay before Edius is freed up to work again. The larger the project grows, the longer the delay. Importing one clip from a hard drive, can send the curser into the "wait spin" for up to a minite!

When I open up the same projects on a XP Pro Platform, there is no waiting, when performing the same operation.

It is kind of reminiscent of doing a search in Vista, and then sorting by "date modified". In XP it was virtually instantaneous, in Vista, there is a big delay while the OS takes another slowwwwwwwww look at all of the drives ... Could this be what is happening when a clip is added to the bin? Vista runs off to take a look at how the new referenced clip will affect all other files in the system?

My question, Is there some setting in Vista that I can turn off to eliminate this Vista timewaster?

Thanks, Vista Power users ...

Is your antivirus turned off?
Indexing of video drives off

Many thanks! It now works as fast as my XP box!

For the record, I first tried just shutting off DEP for just Edius, and that didn't help. It was only when I turned Norton 360 off completely that the program returned to normal.

I always tell people turn off antivirus when using EDIUS. I have tested numerous Antivirus packages with EDIUS for my clients. All of them slow EDIUS down. My clients are believers . :)

I wouldn't turn AV off, I would exclude the specific file types that are in your bin, such as AVI, MPG or whatever, or exclude the tree where you store your project files and assets.

Sadly, Norton 360 is the weakest product Norton has ever produced, and causes huge amounts of problems. I'd seriously look at completely uninstalling it and finding different anti-virus, firewall and anti-spyware solutions.

@THoff

well it all depends on how you network is setup. Because most people I have helped have separate networks for video( NLE 's) from any internet access.
Machines do connect for licensing needs but updates are done from a central place which has all the Anti-virus stuff.

But I would also disable it if I would use it as the only machine and disconnect from internet while editing.

This is all a personal choice. :)

One thing I would do is check to see if you are eligible for a free upgrade:

I am a reseller out here for Nod32 and it has never slowed Edius down.

I just want to add a little bit of background information as to why Norton 360 scans media that may be in your bin. Specially crafted AVI and WAV files can be used to exploit vulnerabilities in DirectX and DirectShow and compromise a system through remote code execution.

If you have large media files, all the disk I/O required to scan the entire files will quickly add up. If you created the files yourself (they came from your own camera(s)), then you could exclude these files from scanning, but if you work with files from outside sources (the Internet or third parties), you shouldn't necessarily trust them.
