EDIUS' philosophy is to always edit in the native format, in full resolution, full frame size. Same goes for EDIUS Neo 2
Booster.
This new AVCHD codec is amazing, and I'm not just paid to say that. I dropped a copy of it on one of our HP z800 dual-quad core Nahalem demo systems late last week and tried to choke it, and I couldn't. My clips were similar in nature to Mark's, though I think I can one-up him on a few things...
I was feeding it 1440x1080i AVCHD clips from a Panasonic AVCHD camera; these went into a 1920x1080i project setting, where I put up to 5 layers, all with some kind of filter or effect (some with multiple!), 3 of the 5 layers were 2D PinP via the Layout tool, plus transitions for everything. I didn't touch the buffer settings--I installed and went straight to it as if it were fresh out of the box.
No stopping, but an ever-so-slight stuttering on the PinP stuff. The clips were "red lined" in a few places, but for the most part, it was crazy smooth.
And the kicker--I hadn't moved the clips off the camera yet! I was still editing in place from the SD card in the camera! When I moved the clips to the C drive, the stuttering went away. I haven't moved them to the RAID to see if there are any further improvements (doubtful--this is more of a processor-intensive job).
Obviously, the average user won't have a powerhouse machine like this, but it gives you an idea of what is possible. :D
